Dog-Friendly Travel Destinations to Visit This Year

Dog-Friendly Travel Destinations to Visit This Year

If you’re anything like me, leaving your dog behind when you travel just isn’t an option. There’s something so special about exploring new places with your pup by your side—whether it’s watching them zoom across a beach, sniff their way through a new city, or curl up next to you after a long day of adventure.

Thankfully, more destinations are becoming dog-friendly, making it easier to plan the perfect trip with your furry best friend. If you’re looking for new spots to explore this year, I’ve rounded up some of my favorite dog-friendly destinations that you and your pup will love!

1. Montauk, NY – The Perfect Beach Escape

Montauk is the kind of place where time slows down. Picture early morning walks along the shore, salty breezes, and plenty of dog-friendly spots to unwind. If your pup loves the beach as much as mine does, this East Coast gem is a must-visit.

🐾 Where to Take Your Pup:

  • Hither Hills State Park – Scenic trails with ocean views.
  • Ditch Plains Beach – Off-season, dogs can run free in the sand.
  • The Montauket – Grab a drink, watch the sunset, and soak up the laid-back vibes.

Pro Tip: Some Montauk beaches have seasonal leash rules, so check before you go. Early morning strolls = fewer crowds and happy, sandy paws!

2. Austin, TX – A Pup’s Playground

Austin is hands down one of the most dog-friendly cities I’ve ever visited. Everywhere you go, you’ll find pups hanging out on patios, running through parks, or even chilling at coffee shops. It’s got that perfect mix of city life and outdoor adventure.

🐾 Must-Visit Spots:

  • Red Bud Isle – A dreamy off-leash island park.
  • Yard Bar – Where you can sip cocktails while your pup makes new friends.
  • South Congress – Walkable, vibrant, and full of dog-friendly shops & restaurants.

Pro Tip: If you’re visiting in the summer, keep in mind that Austin gets hot. Plan morning or evening outings to keep your pup cool!

3. Adirondack Mountains, NY – A Nature Lover’s Dream

If you and your pup love hiking, fresh mountain air, and lakeside naps, the Adirondacks should be on your bucket list. It’s peaceful, breathtakingly beautiful, and packed with dog-friendly trails.

🐾 Best Spots to Explore:

  • Lake Placid – Stay in a cozy lodge with mountain views.
  • Cascade Mountain Trail – A moderate hike with a killer payoff.
  • Mirror Lake – You can even kayak with your pup here!

Pro Tip: Some trails have steep or rocky sections, so bring a harness for extra control. And if you’re hiking in colder months, pack a cozy sweater for your pup!

4. Wildwood Beach, NJ – Where Dogs Rule the Sand

Finding a truly dog-friendly beach isn’t always easy, but Wildwood Beach is a game-changer. They literally have a beach dedicated to dogs—complete with agility equipment for extra fun.

🐾 What Makes It Special:

  • Wildwood Dog Beach – Huge, free, and open year-round.
  • Morey’s Piers – Some seasonal events allow dogs to join in on the fun.
  • Dog-Friendly Hotels – Many places welcome pups with open arms.

Pro Tip: Wildwood Beach is one of the few East Coast beaches that allows dogs year-round, so no need to worry about seasonal bans!

5. Maryland – A Hidden Gem for Dog-Friendly Adventures

I feel like Maryland is seriously underrated when it comes to dog-friendly travel. It has a little bit of everything—charming historic towns, waterfront views, and plenty of nature to explore with your pup.

🐾 Where to Go:

  • Annapolis Waterfront – The perfect mix of coastal charm and dog-friendly spots.
  • Assateague Island – Wild horses roam free here, and your pup can too (in designated areas).
  • Blackwater National Wildlife Refuge – A peaceful escape with beautiful walking trails.

Pro Tip: Most Maryland state parks require leashes, so bring a long lead if you want to give your pup some extra freedom!

6. Cape May, NJ – A Storybook Seaside Escape

Cape May feels like stepping into a postcard. Between its historic charm, pet-friendly beaches, and adorable boutique hotels, it’s an amazing spot to visit with your pup.

🐾 Don’t Miss:

  • Higbee Beach Wildlife Management Area – A quiet, dog-friendly beach.
  • The Rusty Nail – A laid-back beachfront bar that loves dogs.
  • Washington Street Mall – A cute shopping area with dog-friendly shops.

Pro Tip: Some beaches here are only dog-friendly in the off-season, so plan accordingly for a stress-free trip!

Pack Your Bags & Hit the Road!

Nothing beats making memories with your pup by your side. Whether you’re in the mood for a beach escape, a mountain retreat, or a city adventure, these destinations are all so worth visiting.
